चितवन जिल्ला नेपालमा रहेका ७७ जिल्लाहरुमध्य एक हो ।समुद्र सतह देखि १४४ मिटरदेखि १९४७ मीटरसम्म फैलिएका यस जिल्लाको कुल क्षेत्रफल २२३८।३९ वर्ग किलोमिटर रहेको र जनसख्या ७१९८५९ रहेको यस जिल्लाको हावापानी समशितोष्ण र उष्ण प्रकृतिको रहेको छ ।   प्रदेश नं. ३ अन्तर्गत पर्ने चितवन जिल्लामा एक गाउँपालिका, एक महानगरपालिका र पाँच नगरपालिका गरी जम्मा सात वटा स्थानीय तह रहेको छ भने निर्वाचन क्षेत्रको आधारमा तीन वटा प्रतिनिधि सभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र र छ वटा प्रदेश सभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र निर्धारण गरिएको छ । सात वटा स्थानीय तह मध्ये क्षेत्रफलको आधारमा सबैभन्दा ठुलो भरतपुर महानगरपालिकाको क्षेत्रफल ४३२.९५ वर्ग कि.मि. र सबैभन्दा सानो रत्ननगर नगरपालिकाको क्षेत्रफल ६८.६८ वर्ग कि.मि. रहेको छ । त्यस्तै एकमात्र इच्छाकामना गाउँपालिकाको क्षेत्रफल १६६.७३ वर्ग कि.मि. रहेको छ । 
चितवन जिल्लाकाे नामाकरण :
१. चित्रसेनको नामवाट यस स्थानको नाम चितवन भएको कुरा चितवन जिल्लाका आदिवासी भनिने थारु जातिका जानकार हरु बताउछँन् । कसैले पहिले चितवनमा धेरै चितुवा पाइन्थे अनि चितवनमा चार कोसे झाडी(वन) पनि थियो रे जसले गर्दा चितुवा वन भन्न थालियो जुन अपभ्रंस भएर चितवन हुनपुग्यो ।पोराणिक कुरालाइ मान्ने हो भने त्रेता युगमा देवी सीताको वनवास यही भएको मानिन्छ । सीताको वास भएको वन भनेर “सीतावन” भनिने गरेको हुनाले कालान्तरमा आएर सीतावनवाट चितवन हुन गएको विश्वास गरिन्छ । वाल्मीकि आश्रम यही रहनु र सीताप्रवासका लक्ष्मण पनि यहीनै देखिएकाले र भाषाविज्ञानको दृष्टीमा “सीतावन” नै शास्त्र सन्निकट रहेको मानिएकाले उक्त तकर्मा सत्यता भएको विश्वास गरिएको छ ।

ताल तथा कुण्डहरु : बीसहजारी ताल, सत्रहजार ताल, सत्ताइसहजार ताल, अठ्ठाइस हजार ताल, नन्दभाउजु ताल, तमोरघैला ताल, कसरा ताल, मन्जुरा ताल, अन्जुरा ताल, गडुवा ताल, मुण्डा ताल, देवी ताल, बैकुण्ठ ताल, अन्जना ताल, परशुराम कुण्ड तथा बाटुलेपोखरी आदि ।
ऐतिहासिक, धार्मिक तथा पर्यटकीय स्थलहरु : देवघाट, बागेश्वरी, गणेशस्थान, शिवघाट, त्रिवेणी, गोद्धक, पाण्डवनगर, सोमेश्वर कालिका, बिक्रमबाबा, चित्रसारी, जुट्पानी कालिका, उपरदाङगढी, चितवन राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज, सौराह, कुरिनटार, पुराने गढी, सोमेश्वर गढी, कविलासपुर गढी, सिराईचुली

चितवनलाई नेपालकै प्रमुख पर्यटकीय गन्तब्यका रुपमा लिने गरिन्छ । काठमाडौं, पोखरापछि तेस्रो स्थानमा पर्दछ चितवन ।  मुख्यगरीयस जिल्लामा फैलिएको चितवन राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्जमा  दुर्लभ एकसिंगे गैंडा, हात्ती, पाटे बाघ, विभिन्न चराचुरुङ्गी हेर्न तथा जंगल सफारीको आनन्द लिन अन्तरिक तथा बाह्य पर्यटकहरु यहाँ आउने गरेका छन् ।
वार्षिक करीव २ लाख पर्यटक चितवन आउने यस चितवनमा नेपाल आउने पर्यटकको जम्मा २० प्रतिशत मात्रै पर्यटक चितवन आउने गरेको पाइन्छ । यसलाई बढाउने पहल भइरहेको छ ।जिल्लाको प्रमुख पर्यटकीय गन्तब्यका रुपमा सौराहालाई लिने गरिन्छ । चितवन राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज प्रवेश गर्ने अधिकांश पर्यटकहरु सौराहा क्षेत्र भएर नै निकुञ्ज प्रवेश गर्ने गरेका छन् । सौराहाका अलावा पटिहानी, मेघौली, देवघाट जस्ता क्षेत्र पनि यहाँका प्रमुख पर्यटकीय केन्द्र हुन् । यहाँ सयौं मिटर अग्ला डाँडामा अति सिमान्तकृत चेपाङ समुदायदेखि नदी तटीय क्षेत्रमा बस्ने बोटे, थारु, मुसहर जातिसम्मको संस्कृति र मौंलिक रहनसहन देख्न पाइन्छ । देशको ७७ वटै जिल्लाका नागरिक यहाँ छन् .
